In response to this problem our goal is to make healthy eating and food preparation accessible, fun and appealing, to educate as well as counteract the perception that eating healthy is not possible on a budget, or takes too much time, or that healthy food doesn’t taste good. In many ways our eating habits are formed in childhood, and so by targeting children, and in this case specifically Hispanic children, we hope to instill the value of good food early on.

We will follow up in the next couple of days. However, if you would like to reach us with your response, you may do so through e-mail.

The Making

“Niños / It’s Time to Cook!” resulted in a collaboration with Hannah after I had been compelled by the sad reality that Hispanic children are by far some of the most obese kids in schools. I wanted to do something about it and address these issues in a clear and simple manner. Because Hannah, a classmate and fellow graduate student in Graphic Design, was focusing her thesis to nutrition, I thought it was the perfect combination to reunite. The results were amazing. We got to meet and share a little bit of nutritional information with a variety of people of all ages and ethinicities. Sometimes people kept walking, but many times others wanted to know what we were up to.

Like “The New Game of Life”, I wanted to make sure that kids were engaged. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to make these flyers interactive by having the children color their way through the store as they help pick the correct ingredients for either of the three meal recipes (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). The parents in turn got a take-away to compliment their child’s educational experience. This red sheet contained a basic fact about healthy eating habits. All the flyers were translated from English to Spanish with the goal of reaching both audiences. Remaining flyers were placed on the windshields of cars in the parking lot at the end of the afternoon.
